The complete guide
Choosing and using a cotton muslin baby blanket: a simple guide
A cotton muslin blanket is one of those baby things you end up reaching for every single day, so it's worth understanding what makes a good one — and how to keep it soft for the long haul. Here's the short, practical version.
Why six layers
A single sheet of muslin is light and gauzy — lovely for a newborn swaddle, but thin as an everyday blanket. Building it up to six woven layers keeps everything people love about muslin — the breathable open weave, the way it softens with washing — but adds warmth, absorbency and a bit of reassuring weight. It drapes over a pram or a shoulder and stays put, instead of floating off.
Breathable is the point
Muslin's open weave lets air move through the fabric. That's what lets a blanket hold warmth without trapping heat against your baby, so the same blanket works in a warm room and on a cool-weather pram walk. It's also why muslin dries quickly on the line and why it's such a forgiving fabric to live with day to day.
One blanket, many jobs
At 110 × 110 cm this is generous enough to be genuinely useful in more than one place: a pram cover, a clean layer over a changing mat, a cover on your shoulder while feeding, a soft square of floor for tummy time, or a gentle wrap after a bath. Buying one blanket that does five jobs is a lot calmer than buying five single-purpose things.
Keeping it soft
Woven cotton actually improves with washing — the fibres loosen and the blanket gets softer the more you use it. To keep that going: machine wash cold with similar colours, tumble dry on low, and skip fabric softener, which leaves a coating that dulls both the softness and the breathability. Expect a little shrinkage on the first cold wash; that's normal for woven cotton and nothing to worry about.
How many you need
Honestly? Most parents find one isn't enough — not because it wears out, but because it's in the wash exactly when you want it. Two means one is always ready while the other dries, and three makes a lovely boxed gift for a new baby. That's why these come as singles, twos and threes.
A note on safe sleep
This is a pram, floor and carrying blanket — not cot bedding. Current safe-sleep guidance is to keep a baby's cot clear of loose bedding for the first year, so please don't use it for unsupervised sleep. Used for walks, tummy time, changing, feeding and after-bath cuddles, it'll be the most-reached-for blanket in the house.
Want something lighter for the changing bag?
This blanket is the thick, six-layer one for the pram and the floor. For something thinner and more packable — swaddling, burping, a quick pram shade — see our square muslin swaddle cloths, sold as a set of three. Most parents end up with both.
